Holiday music hits different in small towns. You get the school gym buzz, the church choir harmonies, and a few sweet pop-up markets wrapped around it all. Here’s a rolling list to keep you busy from now through March, with quick notes on what to expect and how to check dates. We’ll refresh details as groups post their schedules.

Christmas in the Park, Downtown Osceola
Plan on the first weekend of December for Santa, window fun, and live music around the square. Osceola Chamber Main Street posts the date each fall. For 2025, the event is listed for Saturday, December 6, with the Chamber’s events page carrying the latest. It’s a good place to hear students and local singers while you shop.

Festival of Lights, Winterset
The Friday after Thanksgiving is a tradition in Winterset. Expect live performances in shop windows, carriage rides, a lighted parade at 7:15 p.m., and a holiday movie at The Iowa Theater at 8 p.m. It’s 30 minutes from Osceola and worth the drive. This year’s date is Friday, November 28, 2025.

Holiday movies and specials at The Iowa Theater (Winterset) and The Lyric Theater (Osceola)
The Iowa runs family picks and occasional live sets through December and The Lyric often has Christmas themed events. Check their sites and Facebook for the weekly lineup. It’s a classic marquee, hot popcorn, and friendly volunteers.

Winterset Stage seasonal shows
Local casts, familiar stories, and a few surprises. Productions often use The Iowa Theater as a venue. Follow for December plays and winter weekends in January and February.

Light the Fairgrounds, Clarke County Fairgrounds
One evening of lights, cocoa, and community pride at the fairgrounds in Osceola. For 2025, the Fair lists a “Light the Fairgrounds” date of Saturday, December 6. Dress warm and bring the camera.

Enchanted Holiday Market, Lakeside Casino Event Center
A one-day indoor maker market with music on the sound system, perfect for an intermission between concerts. For 2025, posts point to Saturday, December 13, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Lakeside. Watch the event feed for vendor lists and any stage announcements.

Clarke Community Schools winter concerts
December brings elementary and middle school band and choir nights, with a districtwide choral program most years. These are usually free and open to the public. Check the district events page and activities hub for the latest times and locations.

Church music around town
Church calendars start filling with children’s programs, handbell pieces, and candlelight services. St. Bernard posts Mass times and updates, and larger churches share Christmas music highlights on Facebook. It’s a simple way to catch carols without big-city crowds.

January, warm-up concerts and community theater
After New Year’s, watch Winterset Stage for winter productions and The Iowa for classic film weekends. If the weather is rough, check pages the morning of, since small groups cancel fast.

February, jazz and show choir season
Iowa’s state festival window runs late January through early February. Local schools travel, and some events land within an easy drive. Schedules come through school pages first, then the state music association. If Clarke or a neighbor hosts a daytime festival, it’s a fun watch with low-cost admission.

March, early spring concerts
By early March, you’ll see pre-tour shows, pops concerts, and student showcases start to return. Check Clarke’s events feed in late February for dates and the Iowa Theater calendar for any spring break specials.

How to plan your night

Keep it simple. Pick one anchor event and one warm stop. If you’re catching Festival of Lights, add cocoa at the square and a movie at The Iowa. If you’re doing a school concert, pair it with an early dinner in town, then a drive through neighborhood lights on the way back. Most small stages accept cash or card at the door. Programs last about an hour. Parking is close and walkable.

Weather tips

Winter weather changes fast on open stretches north and west of town. Check pages the day of, give yourself extra minutes on Highway 69, and keep gloves in the car. Many events are family-friendly and will welcome you in boots and parkas.
