Banner: Target practice while visiting a state park near Osceola

When you are in Osceola and have some downtime and are looking for some fun target practice, it might be fun to take Highway 69 from Osceola through Indianola to Banner Shooting Range at Summerset State Park.

The Jeffreys covers a variety of things to do locally, places to see and explore, opportunities to get involved, stay active, or have fun.

The hotel will always point guests in the right direction, maintaining a high level of availability to meet your needs at the hotel, all you have to do is ask.

For those new to the area or town for a while and looking for something to do, there are many nooks and crannies to explore in Central Iowa.

A nice state park

Summerset State Park is a state park area covered in a previous post - it has decent hiking, kayaking, and other recreational activities for people, families or groups - located about 45 minutes from the hotel, and not far away on US Highway 65/69.

For hunting parties or those looking for a good place to visit and target practice safely, Banner Shooting Range, managed by the Iowa DNR, is approximately a mile east of the park.

The state park itself is only about 45 minutes from the hotel, is accessible starting out via I-35 or heading straight out on Highway 69 for the more scenic views.

Banner: A professionally managed shooting and archery range

The shooting range is a multi-use outdoor shooting facility supporting disciplines including handguns, rifles, shotguns and archery, according to the DNR’s website. It is located at 13796 Elk Horn Street, Indianola, IA 50125.

They operate year round, though hours vary seasonally. It’s always good to check ahead, be aware of holiday schedules or any weather-related closures.

Range layout and range features

The DNR notes there are 7 dedicated lanes, 13 rifle lanes offering 25-, 50- and 100-yard distances. For shotgun/clay target throwers, the range includes 5 manual clay-target throwers for shotgun practice. Steel targets are suitable for .22 rimfire, handguns and rifles.

There is a dedicated archery area.

Indoor restrooms and basic amenities support a comfortable visit. The latest posted hourly rates as of January 1, 2025, were listed at $12 per hour, with a family/couple rate of $18 per hour, or $8 per round for the shotgun range discipline. Daily individual archery use is approx. $10, a family rate of $16.

The range offers annual memberships including single and family annual passes

Safety First, Accessibility

A few of the rules are as follows, the DNR says.

  • All shooters must register at the range office upon arrival, no exceptions.
  • Eye and ear protection are mandatory for anyone in active shooting areas.
  • Certified Range Safety Officers (RSOs) remain on duty during operating hours.

At all times, standard safe-shooting practices apply: muzzle must always point down-range; firearms must be unloaded and open action when range is “cold” plus additional standards and regulations.

Youth are permitted on the range but only under strict adult supervision

Safety is Banner’s top priority. The last check-in will be 30 minutes before close.
